Where to celebrate Philippine Independence Day in Dubai

Big bash planned at Boracay, plus a day out at Al Nasr Leisureland

Philippine Independence Day is one of the most important events for Filipinos, marking the anniversary of the nation’s freedom from Spanish rule. Every year on June 12, thousands of Filipino expats gather in Dubai to celebrate, with various fun-filled activities and entertainment as well as the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony.

In 2014, highlights of the festivities include the coronation of Ms Fil-Independence Dubai – a beauty pageant with cultural performances– plus a concert on Saturday June 14 at Boracay Night Club in Asiana Hotel.

Organiser Royal Crystal Events said: 'Ms Fil-Independence is happening for the very first time in Dubai. Since Filipinos are fascinated with beauty pageants, we made the concept to efficiently entice the Filipino expats in the emirates to participate in the commemoration of Philippine Independence Day. Apart from this, we believe that this occasion is a good way to revive the spirit of the Filipino culture in Dubai'.

The evening will also feature performances by two of Philippines' most promising singers, Jireh Lim and Bassilyo. Check them out below

Jireh Lim

Jireh Lim is one artist to look out for. He became an instant internet sensation after posting his song 'Buko’ (short for Buhay Ko) on YouTube, attracting more than ten million views. The song continues to reverberate in radio stations in the Philippines without a formal recording. Jireh Lim has not only attracted netizens around the world, but also various people in different nationalities who even made their own version of his song 'Buko'. Other notable hits in his YouTube channel JIREH214 are 'Magkabilang Mundo', 'Diwata', 'Alone' and 'My First and My Last'.

Lordivino Ignacio is popularly known as Bassilyo in the Philippine hip-hop scene. He was discovered and mentored by the country's master rapper Francis Magalona from the Rap Public of the Philippines contest. Bassilyo continued his music career through joining rap battle contests such as Fliptop and Sunugan. His new single 'Lord Patawad (Lord Forgive Me)’ gained 13 million views on YouTube and kickstarted his fame.
