When is it?
The festival – which began in Dubai in 2010 - returns this November 20 and 21. Whereas it used to be focused on sneakers it’s now a celebration of hip-hop, basketball and art too. Fan of shooting hoops? The Sole Ball Above All Classic open winner-takes-all tournament is made up of 12 teams from the region.
What can we expect?
Never before seen products from brands such as adidas Originals, Puma Select, and Reebok Classics. Also distinctive visuals by Hassan Hajjaj, represented by The Third Line. Sole DXB’s own ‘Early Retirement’ pop-up will be selling their exclusive collaborations with brands such as Puma, Filling Pieces, and New Era. Swap & Sale will offer people the opportunity to source a ‘grail’ with fifteen hand-picked regionally-based collectors showcasing their wears.
What else is there apart from shoes?
There will also be entertainment on offer with four live headline music acts, plus international and local DJs. On the line-up is tennis legend, Stan Smith, one half of Run-DMC and music star, Darryl McDaniels, renowned DJ, Stretch Armstrong, illustrator and designer, Josh Parkin, plus Hip-Hop group Mobb Deep.
What about the artsy side in me?
BAQALA installation celebrating a fading cultural asset to the Middle East, conceptualized by We Are The Medium is marking their 50 years in the region. Sub-cultural photographer, Lisa Leone, will be shooting live at the event, and there will be a series of talks on street culture, “historical to abstract, subversive to specialist” including conversations with music supremo Bobbito Garcia.
