Quick guide to Dubai Media City

Time Out has a handy quick guide to Dubai Media City, including places to eat, things to do, concerts and more

I’ve never actually asked, where is home for you Time Out?
We’re based in Dubai Media City.

Tell me more about this area.
It’s home to most of the emirate’s media companies. As well as us, MBC, the BBC, CNN, Reuters and literally tons of other magazines are based here.

What is there to do in Media City other than work?
The Media City Amphitheatre is probably Dubai’s best-known outdoor concert venue. Rita Ora, The Jacksons, Chaka Khan, Steve Aoki, The Vamps, Carlos Santana, Sting, Take That, Paolo Nutini, The Stone Roses, Craig David and so many more have all performed at the venue.

That must be a pretty big space then…
The grassy knoll has a temporary stage built for visiting artists. All kinds of festivals and events are staged here, such as Taste of Dubai and the annual Winter Festival.

So Media City sparkles when under the spotlight, but how about when nobody is looking?
Tens of thousands of people work in the neighbourhood and they all need feeding and watering. There is an abundance of cafés and cool eateries for office-dwellers. Urban Bistro and Circle Café are two such by the lake. You can often see media types sipping lattes, forking superfood salads and looking at the terrapins in the water as they pontificate about their latest tweet strategy and postpone going to the office. 1762 and Joga are two other popular deli-style cafés in the area.

What is there to do after work?
When MacBooks are logged off and office beanbags are left behind for the night, there are two key destinations. The Radisson Blu Hotel has a good Italian restaurant, Certo, and rooftop hangout Tamanya Terrace. Both are boutique in size and good for intimate gatherings. For a livelier night out the Media One Hotel is home to The Dek On 8, Q43, which also has a popular ladies’ night, and Level 41, which plays host to some of the world’s top DJs. There is more to this area than work – it’s popular with non-media types in the city, too.

The Garden on 8
Hops garden style, chilled atmosphere, gnomes – what else do you need from a nightspot? We are big fans of this rooftop garden and like the small pocket of greenery in a neighbourhood better known for office towers and business meetings.
