Barry Hilton is one of the biggest names on the stand-up circuit. He’s taken his hilarious shows from London’s Comedy Store to Australia, Switzerland, Hong Kong, New Zealand and beyond, and he’s back in Dubai for one night only as part of a whistle-stop Middle Eastern tour. Not sure who we’re talking about? Here’s what you need to know about the South African star.
Hailing from Cape Town, Hilton is something of a national treasure in his home country, with stints in films, on TV talk shows and dozens of commercials, alongside his stand-up gigs and popular comedy DVDs.
He’s dad to no fewer than six kids (if that’s not fodder for a comedy show, we don’t know what is) who keep him at the top of his game when it comes to writing new material. His sets are all about taking the mundane bits of every day life, and finding ways to make them seem ludicrous – peppered with hilarious anecdotes from his own family.
Brilliantly timed and universally relatable, on Hilton’s last visit to the city in 2013 he made our shortlist for Best Comedy Gig, up there with the likes of John Cleese and Russell Peters. We’ve no doubt he will impress just as much this time round, much like he did when we chatted to him last time he was in town.
We’ll see you there.
