Jebel Ali Recreation Club to undergo massive revamp

New complex behind original site to feature new restaurants and a cinema

Love yourself a local institution? You may want to look away now...

Construction work has been underway on a new facility behind Dubai’s long-standing Jebel Ali Recreation Club for some time, and Time Out can now confirm that its pub, The Ship’s Wheel, will close down at its original site.

But fans of the old-school Dubai haunt, which has been open since the late ’70s, may be relieved to learn that the pub will not disappear completely. Instead, it's set to be relocated to the new structure just behind the original Recreation Club building.

Adjacent to a brand-new and more modern outlet called The Clubhouse, the new Ship’s Wheel will sit at the back, featuring more pool tables and TVs than before. As part of plans to maintain the same look and feel of the old pub, some décor and accessories will be brought over and incorporated from the original.

Also planned for the new complex is an Asian seafood menu, called Seafood Kitchen – a casual, seafood market-style concept with lots of open space.

Menus throughout the project are being developed with Scottish chef Ryan Waddell, formerly of Reform Social & Grill in The Lakes. During Waddell’s tenure, Reform took home a number of Time Out Dubai Restaurant Awards – a promising sign for Jebel Ali.

Restaurants are expected to open at the new facility during the summer period, though no official opening dates have yet been revealed. A cinema and café will open at a later, also unconfirmed date.
