The Red Bull Air Race World Championship is paying a flying visit to the capital next weekend (Friday February 2-Saturday February 3) as a brand new season gets off the ground, The aerial extravaganza will be taking over the Abu Dhabi skyline for the 11th year, with a hugely talented line-up of pilots wowing crowds with their stunning skills.

The competition combines speed, precision and skill using the fastest lightweight racing planes on the planet, and sees pilots from all over the globe hitting speeds of up to 370kmh.

The opening race of the championship will see airbound racers twist and turn their way around a low-level slalom track marked by 25-metre-high, air-filled pylons, while providing some thrilling sights for fans gathered on the scenic Corniche.

Enthusiasts will be able to witness every minute of the action from the purpose-built race village on the Corniche breakwater, offering great views of the race.

Spectators have been flocking to the event in huge numbers since the Red Bull Air Race first soared into the skies back in 2007.

The high-flying squad of 14 pilots will be jetting in from all over the world for the big race.

Defending champion Yoshihide Muroya of Japan will lead a field also including 2016 winner Matthias Dolderer of Germany, last year’s runner-up Martin Šonka of the Czech Republic, third-placed Canadian Pete McLeod and British newcomer Ben Murphy, a former leader of the famous Red Arrows.

After paying a flying visit to the UAE, the championships will make a blockbuster debut in Cannes, France as part of this eight-race series that will also take in Kazan in Russia, the Hungarian capital of Budapest and Indianapolis in the United States.

Qualifying for the Abu Dhabi race will start at 11am on Friday, February 2, with the race itself kicking off at noon the following day.
