Surf competition returning to Dubai

Surfing, beach yoga, live music and food at Dubai’s Nikki Beach Resort

Is there anywhere better to ride the waves than on the crystal shores of the Arabian Gulf?

We think not, and that’s why we’re so excited about the Sunset Open Surf Competition. The event is the only surfing competition in the GCC region and the waiting period (the window in which competitors can jump on suitable waves) is open until Saturday March 31.

The two-day event will run across the best consecutive Friday and Saturday of the five-week waiting period – so we don’t know exactly when it will be just yet.

The competition features six divisions including men, women and children over six, but there’s plenty of other beachside fun for spectators at Nikki Beach Resort & Spa.

There’ll be beach yoga, strength and fitness training provided by RIG Crossfit, parkour installations, a retail selection from Surf House Dubai, live music and a ton of food from the resort. Now that’s what we’re talking about.

The event is now in its seventh year and will bring together some of the best surfing talent from across the region, so even if you don’t fancy taking to the board yourself, there’ll be plenty of action on which to spectate.

Scott Chambers, Managing Director and Founder of Surf House Dubai, who organise the event, said, “Surf competitions rely on the whims of nature, so the two-day event will run across the best consecutive Friday and Saturday of waves within this five-week waiting period.

“It’s one of the most exciting times of the year for Dubai’s existing surf community - we have a surprisingly strong surf history here and we’re proud that there’s so much great talent in the region.

“It’s also a great opportunity for newcomers and other interested parties to experience Dubai’s vibrant surf community, whether it’s to take part in the event or simply to enjoy the atmosphere and other activities there.”

You don’t need to tell us twice, Scott.
