What is the International Day of Happiness?

Here's how Dubai is celebrating the day on March 20

International Day of Happiness is upon us, with the simple purpose of turning everyone’s frowns upside down.

The globe will celebrate the joyous event on Tuesday March 20 – but what does it mean for Dubai? A whole lot of offers to put a smile on your face, of course.

WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS?
Since it started in 2013, the global event has been all about shifting people’s attitudes.

In partnership with the non-profit movement Action for Happiness, the United Nations has recognised the importance of increasing human happiness and wellbeing, not just growing the economy.

With that in mind, Dubai has set up a selection of happiness festivities to help you focus on your wellbeing.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN DUBAI?
On Thursday March 15, the city began its celebration of joy with The Journey to Happiness parade.

Dubai’s City Walk came alive with music and dance performances, with more than 2,000 people from 200 countries parading up and down the streets.

The parade will continue for the next few days from 4pm to 10pm, culminating on Tuesday March 20 with a wealth of activities and performances, which are free for everyone to participate in.

On the actual Day of Happiness, it’s all about the free stuff.

RTA officials will be giving out free taxi rides in Dubai to 100 lucky people at Dubai International Airport.

There will also be freebies for Nol card users who fancy a Metro trip instead.

That’s not all, as officials will also be handing out free trips to kayak at Hatta Dam lake, while a “happiness bus” will run to major destinations including La Mer and Global Village.

If that won’t put a spring in your step, the government is cutting the price of certain goods in supermarkets by up to 50 percent for a whole month.

Starting on Tuesday, it’s time to get those shopping bags ready and make space in that fridge for some incredible offers.

The price cut will cover more than 600 stores across the UAE. Happy days, indeed.
