Dubai taxis are now accepting Apple Pay

As many as 8,000 cabs have installed the technology

If you've ever experienced the awkwardness of realising you've got no cash halfway through a taxi journey, then we've got some good news for you.

RTA has introduced a new cutting-edge service that lets you pay for cabs by smartphone.

That's right – no more awkward fumbling for 50 fils or hopping out at an ATM to withdraw money to pay the driver.

All it takes is a quick tap of your phone and the fare is paid. Easy peasy. Of course, if you prefer to pay by cash or credit card that's still available too.

At the moment, as many as 8,000 cabs have installed the technology which works with Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

It is part of the 'Smart City' initiative by the Dubai Government which has seen electric car parking stations installed across the city and WiFi provided in public areas.

RTA chief executive Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan said: "The service is aimed to offer taxi riders smooth payment options that raise their satisfaction and happiness.

"As many as 8,000 taxicabs are now using this POS technology, and we aim to broaden the scope of the service to cover a larger number of taxi users.”

He added: "Raising customers’ satisfaction and offering them smooth customers service experience is also a priority to RTA as it adopts top global standards and edge-cutting technologies in delivering services."
