Dubai’s coldest places – from the cinema to the milk aisle

The scorching heat can’t catch you in these areas

It’s official. The weather apps on our phones have breached the 40°C mark, which means we can officially start complaining about how sweltering it is.

While we’ve been readying our SPF50+++ sunblock and trying to crank the A/C down to impossible sub-zero temperatures, we’ve put together a highly unscientific guide to the coolest places around Dubai to escape the blistering heat.

These spots could just be the icy haven that you’re craving.

Chillout Ice Lounge
Tucked away on the first floor of Times Square Centre is an unexpected icy oasis that reaches temperatures of -6°C.

Impossible you say? Clearly you haven’t made your way over to the Chillout Ice Lounge.

Being the first venue of its kind in the Middle East, it’s become quite a popular place to sip on some rich hot chocolate in sub-zero temperatures.

A frosty experience as the sizzling heat fast approaches? Count us in.
Open Sat-Wed 10am-10pm, Thu-Fri 10am-midnight. Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Quoz (04 341 8020).

iScream at La Mer
Sometimes, all we want to do is come home to a nice curry, but in this heat, a spicy curry can put you on the verge of getting heatstroke.

However, what if the flavours of curry were put into ice cream form?

At La Mer’s iScream you can satisfy your curry cravings and not have to worry about sweating it out with each bite.

Yes, the taste is pretty peculiar, but there are over 44 other flavours the shop offers if you’re just looking for something regular to beat the heat with.
Sun-Thu 10am-midngiht, Fri-Sat 10am-1am. La Mer, Jumeirah 1, (04 220 8648).

Ski Dubai
Picture yourself cruising down the slopes as a cool breeze blows past your face – in a mall, in a desert.

It’s not something you would expect, but it’s certainly something we’re thankful for.

Ski Dubai’s temperatures are cold enough to maintain a comfortable habitat for actual penguins, so it’s the ideal place to cool down.

It’s open every day, so take the time to have fun skiing (or doing face plants, depending on how good you are at it) and play with the penguins. They will never know the true weather of Dubai’s summer heat…
Open Sun-Wed 10am-10pm; Thu-Sat 10am-midnight. Al Barsha, Mall of the Emirates (04 341 4222).

Snow room at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray's spa
We’re dreaming of a white…room full of snow. If you’re missing out on waking up to a windowsill filled with icy flakes of joy, rather than beaming sun, The Talise Ottoman Spa at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray has got you covered.

The room is beneficial for pain receptors as well as relaxing and brightening your mood, but we all know we’ll be heading over there just to take a break from the rising temperatures.
Open daily, 10am-9.30pm. Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, Palm Jumeirah (04 453 0000).

Sushi Counter in Dubai Media City
As soon as you walk in, you’ll find a selection of fresh salads bathing on refrigerated shelves.

In a dream world, we would want to be doing the same, but we’ll settle for eating the beautifully wrapped-up seafood that’s been chilled to perfection.

Sushi Counter at Dubai Media City is just the place for people to beat the heat.
Open daily 11am-11pm. CNBC Food Court, Dubai Media City, (04 375 1096).

The Underground Pub at Dubai Marina
What’s one of the best tactical options to hide from the scorching sunshine? Take a lesson from a mole and head underground.

Or, better yet, head to The Underground Pub in the Dubai Marina.

This quirky British-themed pub is pretty cool to look at and equally as cool temperature wise, as it does its job of making sure no hint of sun can be seen.
Open daily noon-3am. Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection, Dubai Marina (04 408 4257).

Vox Cinemas, Mall of the Emirates
Oh Vox Cinemas, supplying us with the latest blockbusters, comfortable seating and, best of all, ruthlessly cool air-conditioning.

While we would normally bring a second layer of clothing just to stand the chilliness while watching our favourite flick, this time we can forget all about it.

Embrace every ounce of cold you can get while the movie lasts, and if you haven’t gotten enough, there are plenty of amazing summer films coming out to catch, so get another ticket and head right back in.
Open Sun-Wed 10am-10pm; Thu-Sat 10am-midnight. Al Barsha, Mall of the Emirates, (04 341 4222).

Milk Aisle at Spinneys
Okay, okay. Yes, this one is a bit of a stretch, but can you really tell us that you haven’t stared at the milk section at Spinneys a lot longer than you should have?

This little slice of frostiness is so nice and cool that it’s hard to not stop by, even if we already have 20 cartons back at home.

It’s a Spinneys guilty pleasure.
