“What’s in a name?”, Shakespeare once mused. Quite a lot, it turns out. At least if you’re an adorable baby otter.
Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is giving the public the chance to name two of its new-born otters. Jack and Jill? Nah, maybe Salt and Pepper? We’ll think of something better.
The pups, a boy and girl, are Asian small-clawed otters, which is a highly threatened species supported by the aquarium at The Dubai Mall through its natural breeding programme.
To enter, head over to the otter’s competition page and get that name generator in full swing. The most imaginative and meaningful names will be given to the two lovable creatures.
Winners also stand a chance to win a family pass to visit the pups, along with seeing the other new-born otters in the aqua nursery at the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.
Many otter species are unfortunately on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) red list of threated species.
However, the aquarium experts aim to educate and encourage conservation efforts amongst visitors to fight the extinction of these natural species.
As for the baby otters, they have a somewhat special royal lineage, as their mother, Ginger, is the daughter of the first resident otter at Dubai Aquarium’s opening in 2008.
The pups showcase the success of Dubai Aquarium’s breeding programme to help conserve the species.
It’s time to get those creative juices flowing and take part in this name game.
Open Sun-Wed 10am-11pm, Thu-Sat 10am-midnight. Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, The Dubai Mall, Downtown Dubai, otters.thedubaiaquarium.com (04 448 5200).
