Careem to launch food delivery in Dubai

The takeaway app could be up and running as early as September

e’ve got Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Talabat… the list goes on. But with more apps come more food options, and any service that brings our grub right to the door gets the thumbs up from us.

Dubai ride-hailing app Careem is reportedly planning to spend up to US$150 million (Dhs551 million) to launch a food delivery business and in our humble opinion every dirham is well spent.

According to Reuters, the launch could happen as early as September, pioneering in Pakistan before being followed by the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries as well as Egypt.

Careem has reportedly been trialling food delivery services after acquiring regional online restaurant listing platform RoundMenu in February, Reuters said.

The company, which has 24 million registered users, already competes with Uber for taxi services in many major Middle East cities including Dubai, Riyadh and Cairo.

However, reports earlier this month suggested Uber and Careem are in preliminary talks to combine their Middle Eastern ride-hailing services.
Careem, whose backers include Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten and German automaker Daimler, was valued at a little more than US$1 billion (Dhs3.67 billion) in a 2016 funding round, making it one of the most valuable technology startups in the Middle East.

At Time Out Dubai we are more than partial to a takeaway every now and again and have constructed this list of our favourite take out dishes to be combined with a Netflix pairing. Hopefully we will be adding Careem options to the roundup sooner rather than later. And of course, we'll keep you up to date with all the latest on that here at Time Out Dubai.
