In the studio: Jean-Micheal Machias

French artist in Dubai talks about his love of bull-fighting, finding inspiration and the daily struggles of life.

In the studio

In the first of a new series of locally based artists, Time Out talks to Jean-Michel Machias, an artist from the south of France who’s just rocked up in Dubai.

What is your attraction to the Corrida (bullfight)?
The corrida is a very powerful subject. Through it I can express my most powerful feelings and opinions. In my art I try to show that we should not look at it as a battle between man and a big animal, but rather as the daily battles between us as human beings and the obstacles that we need to overcome in life.

Where do you look for inspiration in Dubai?
I have to say that the amount of energy and creativity around us in Dubai is never ending. There is no city I know where they can create an entire district in a year or two! The shape of some buildings here are pure art and I’m happy to be able to absorb some of that energy.

Got any shows coming up?
I‘ve only just moved to Dubai and am actually looking for a gallery willing to expose my art. People interested in my art can head to
