Out and about with Hatty Pedder

What: Splash Fashion Show model casting.
Where: Media One Hotel.
When: Monday January 21.

Last Monday I dashed to the open casting for the Splash Fashion Show, organised by marketing agency Brag. Splash shows are legendary, and renowned for their creativity. I’d been worried about finding the venue thanks to my terrible sense of direction, but I needn’t have worried – the hordes of models walking towards Media One Hotel were a clear indication I was on the right track.

As I entered, lots of familiar faces greeted me – first up was casting director Michael Amazona Del Mar. Michael was yelling the models’ numbers – I’d never quite noticed how loud his vocals were until that day. The venue had a warehouse feel and a cool, relaxed vibe, with models and style mavens everywhere (note to self: must ink this scene). The models were asked to remove their shoes and were measured, before walking for the Splash panel of judges. Female models needed to be at least 175cm tall, while male models needed to be 180cm. Face shots were taken, and I wondered if any new talent had been discovered.

I introduced myself to striking model Prussia Nala Kiva. Prussia is 24 years old and used to model in London before coming to Dubai. She is often compared to Iman, and I can see why. She was warm and friendly, and told me her latest interest was skydiving, which made my penchant for Pilates seem rather unimpressive. I decided Prussia must be inked – especially in her bold orange dress.

Before leaving, I said a quick hello to Sleiman Dayaa, the art director and stylist for Roberto Cavalli. It had been fun, even though I realised that in my super-high Gucci heels I felt pretty short among the Amazonian models. On the way home I wondered which models would be chosen for the Splash show – with lots of fresh inspiration, I couldn’t wait to get my pens out.
