Mix up your art collection by purchasing a mystery piece of work in this original event from the Royal College of Art.
RCA Secret was launched several years ago in London as a way of raising money to fund bursaries for Fine Art masters students at the Royal College of Art. Alumni are asked to produce a postcard featuring their work and sign it on the back, but for RCA Secret Dubai the initiative has also been opened up to regional artists.
Up to 1,000 postcards will be showcased at Art Dubai anonymously, and the idea is that visitors purchase the artwork without knowing the identity of the artist. All proceeds from this edition will go towards supporting talented students at RCA, as well as for the college to run courses in Dubai.
This fun process means that you could end up with a piece of work by anyone from a young, unknown student at Zayed University, to famous alumni of the college like Tracy Emin or Damien Hirst – both of whom have contributed in the past, along with the likes of Stella McCartney, David Hockney and Giorgio Armani. Although the list of participating artists is revealed beforehand – so art aficionados have the opportunity to try and decipher which postcard was made by which artist – identities will only be revealed post-purchase.
Contributors can chose to submit a drawing, painting or photography piece for their postcard. With each artwork priced at only Dhs500, it’s an affordable, fun and inventive way for any collector to purchase a truly unique or unusual piece, and discover new artists they might not have otherwise encountered.
Postcards will be exhibited at Art Dubai and available for public sale on March 21, midday-6pm, on a first-come-first-served basis. www.rca.ac.uk/secretdubai.
