Time Out Dubai has an interview with XVA Gallery curator, Eleanor Smith. Find out about the art gallery in Dubai historical district, Al Fahidi

How did you start your career in art?
Following a foundation diploma in art and a degree in photography, I was lucky enough start working at XVA Gallery. This came about as a result of several internships I did here during my studies.

What exactly does a curator do?
We’re involved in all aspects of putting together an art exhibition. Everything from liaising with the artists, choosing the works, installing them and caring for the needs of the viewers.

What skills are needed for this job?
It’s important for a curator to be sensitive, flexible and enthusiastic. The care and interpretation of a collection is their responsibility.

Best bit of your job?
Every day is different. And starting at 10am is nice, too.

Most challenging aspect?
Making sure everyone is happy in this world of big personalities.
