Jalal Abuthina has spent more than a decade taking photographs of Dubai’s older neighbourhoods, and has turned the results into a series of books, postcards and photographic prints titled, Inside Dubai.
The collection is a visual reflection of contemporary life in the city. The first book within it, The Best of Dubai Shop Names, features a number of retail store signs that have been misunderstood and mistranslated, meanwhile Dubai: Behind the Scenes takes the reader on a journey through the neighbourhoods of Deira, across Dubai Creek and into Bur Dubai.
This 210-page collection of photographs highlights the under-celebrated side of the city and its residents, and aims to be eye-opening for tourists and newer expats to the city.
Here, Abuthina talks us through some of the products available to buy online and gives us an insight into capturing the visuals within them. For more information, visit insidedubai.ae
Memories of Satwa
“This book includes rare images of residents and parts of Satwa that have been documented over the past decade. Some of the areas featured include the Emirati neighbourhood of Al Shabia, which has now been completely demolished.”
“The Best of Dubai Shop Names is a light-hearted book containing the funniest and most unique shop names in the city. Anyone looking for a humorous and extensive account of the best in the city should find this book is a must-have.”
“This collection has been produced as an alternative to Dubai’s overtly commercial representation and lack of variety in the tourist memorabilia industry. There are various canvas prints available to order online.”
“The ID line of postcards provides a spectrum of visual treats and subject matter from the city, ranging from everyday street scenes to the surreal. Each postcard comes with its own individual sleeve and there are 16 different postcards to choose from.”
Jalal's books are available from Kinokuniya Bookworld at Dubai Mall, Jashanmal Bookstores in Mall Of The Emirates and Festival City, and Gulf Photo Plus in Alserkal Avenue.
