Curated by Fereydoun Ave, Basement brings together three very exciting Iranian artists. Artist and musician Reza Derakshani displays his delicate, painted panel-like canvases. They are like a scrap of Persian carpet, blown up and made derelict. Paint runs down them in disarray, floral designs appear left to weather and the vague outline of birds can just be glimpsed. Sara Abbasian’s works give metallic objects a new life by transforming them into living figures. In one work, an unidentifiable panel of steel, punctuated by screws, becomes a face wrapped in a chador. While Mansour Rafeiei paints strange subterranean landscapes, looking like a batch of glowing amoebas and jellyfish that float by in a disconcerting and markedly inhuman way. A huge show at this Al Quoz gallery, well worth taking a look.
