Bollywood’s Broadway

It’s a classic tale of good vs. evil in this all-singing, all-dancing theatrical extravaganza

Bollywood has gone from screen to stage at Dubai Parks And Resorts, where a brand-new residential show, Jaan-e-Jigar, has launched at the Rajmahal Theatre.

Think glittering costumes, extravagant sets reminiscent of Bollywood’s golden age, and epic dance numbers that haven’t been seen since Aishwarya Rai’s and Madhuri Dixit’s iconic Dola De Rola scene in the 2002 film Devdas (if you’re not sure what this is, do yourself a favour and Google it. Now).

Hundreds and hundreds of actors, dancers and acrobats from across India auditioned, while art direction comes from one of the biggest names in the business: none other than Omung Kumar, the Bollywood heavyweight behind box office hits Black and Saawariya.

Hidayat Sami, the show’s director, and Shiamak Davar, the choreographer, have gone all out, with some of the actors in leading roles practising stunts for up to 16 hours a day.

The story has all the makings of a riotous tale of good vs. evil. Set in the royal town of Ishqabad, it follows two brothers separated at birth and re-united years later. It’s a tongue-in-cheek production, featuring a “benevolent king”, a “fearless warrior”, a “treacherous sister”, a “charming prince” and a “manipulative jester” to name just a few, so (along with a completely original soundtrack and choreography, 3D LED screens and special effects) you can expect plenty of gasp-inducing dramatics and unexpected twists.
