Mary Poppins the musical announced for Dubai Opera

Time Out has news as Mary Poppins the musical announced for Dubai Opera, set to perform a 19-day run at the concert venue in Downtown Dubai in May 2017

Mary Poppins the musical is the latest mega-show coming to Dubai Opera.

The hit musical will take to the stage in May 2017 for a 19-day run, becoming the third hugely significant West End/Broadway performance of its kind to visit the region since the opening of the iconic new venue.

With Les Miserables currently wowing audiences, and Cats to come in early January, it has been a remarkable few months for musical theatre in the region.

Reflecting on the announcment, multi-award winning producer, Sir Cameron Mackintosh said: “It’s hard to believe that it is already 12 years since Mary Poppins first landed on the London stage.

"I'm delighted to be bringing her to Dubai for the very first time, after spreading her magic around the world. Since we originally staged the production we have found even more magical ways to stage this timeless tale and I’m sure you will find our new Mary practically perfect in every way."

The story of Mary Poppins is one of Disney's most enduring, telling the tale of the Banks family, their nanny and chimney sweep Bert who came together on Cherry Tree Lane in Edwardian London.

Originally written by PL Travers - the life and times of which were recently retold in a Hollywood film starring Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks - and immortalised on screen by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, it was been enchanting children for more than 75 years.

Fans can expert songs like Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Feed the Birds, alongside a range of new songs and additional music and lyrics.

Tickets go on sale at 9am on Sunday November 27 at www.dubaiopera.com
