Dubai set to complete its largest all-purpose, air-conditioned indoor arena in 2019

We love a good gig here in Dubai, and there will soon be a hot new arena to host all those world-famous artists and chart toppers.

Dubai-based developer Meraas plans to open Dubai Arena in 2019, and it’s designed to host huge concerts as well as sporting events such as tennis, basketball, boxing, volleyball and ice hockey, along with exhibitions, festivals and much more.

The huge complex, located at City Walk, has recently had its active-lit façade and steel structure finished, along with a majority of its roof catwalks as well as the structural foundation of the building.

It can hold up to 17,000 people, and will also have scoreboards, lighting and sound systems, 46 hospitality suites and much more – all to be installed over the next few months.

Construction of the building has been managed by AEG Ogden, a company whose portfolio includes The O2 in London, the STAPLES Centre in Los Angeles and the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai.

“Dubai Arena has been designed to enhance the city’s reputation as a destination for world-class events and hospitality, and will transform the industry throughout the Middle East”, said Group Chairman at Meraas His Excellency Abdulla Al Habbai.

“We are confident that Dubai Arena will position the city on the international entertainment touring circuit and audiences will have the opportunity to witness the world’s most talented performers and sporting events in the heart of Dubai.”

There’s still a little ways to go, including work on the roof structure that weighs approximately 4,000 tonnes, which is “equivalent in weight to seven A380 airplanes”. It’s all to make the acoustics of the arena just right.

While we can’t wait to see what’s to come when it finally opens in 2019, in the meantime we have plenty of nightlife events to look forward to, including Scooter and Eiffel 65 on Friday November 16, along with George Ezra in January.
