Dubai showed no sign of slowing down its expansion in 2018 with a bounty of brand-new boroughs bursting onto the scene. First there was Al Seef, then there was Bluewaters and finally there was The Pointe.

Nakheel’s 1.4million sq ft entertainment and dining development opened in December and boasts a 1.5km promenade with more than 100 restaurants and retail outlets for seafront dining and shopping.

Ali Rashid Lootah, chairman of Nakheel, said: “The Pointe is an iconic, must-see attraction offering remarkable lifestyle experiences for residents and tourists. Inspired by the heritage and culture of the Emirates, it will be a stunning, vibrant and unique addition to Dubai’s dining, retail and entertainment scene.” Excited? We are.

Sounds good, but where is it?
It fills the space at the top of the Palm Jumeirah’s manmade trunk opposite Atlantis The Palm. It’s a soft W shape hugging the coastline with a dancing water fountain as its centrepiece. Small boats will be able to dock nearby and there promises to be a rotation of stellar acts taking to the stage. King of Latin Pop and Spanish heartthrob Enrique Iglesias already performed to excited fans over the festive period. Watch this space for further announcements.

And what is there to see and do?
In a nutshell: 53 places to eat, 17 places to spend your hard-earned cash, two gyms to pump iron, one nightclub/karaoke bar, one huge kids’ play area and the Palm’s first-ever cinema not housed in a swanky hotel or private villa. Oh, and 1,600 places to park.

Cheeky Monkeys
Cheeky Monkeys is Time Out Dubai Kids’ current Best Soft Play Venue and its newest location is where little ones can come together to laugh and make new friends. Inside, there’s a huge soft play area, of course, birthday party venue as well as five levels of fun including slides, trampolines and climbers. It’s the perfect spot for kids to enjoy hours of uninterrupted fun (and exercise).
Dhs55 (first hour) Dhs30 (each hour thereafter). Sat-Thu 6am-9pm; Fri closed. Visit www.cheekymonkeys.com (04 434 3661).

Reel Cinema
Reel Cinemas has teamed up with US TV chef Guy Fieri again for the fourth collaboration. The Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives host brings his signature American comfort food, but with a twist – as you can order your meal and enjoy it while watching the latest blockbuster. There are three screens with the dine-in option and two where you can just stick to good ol’ cinema treats.
From Dhs40 (cinema only). Open daily 12.30pm-1am. Email enquiries@reelcinemas.ae.

Staying on the food…
With no shortage of excellent places to refuel on the Palm, The Pointe is bridging the gap between fast food and fancy. Why? Well, you’ll find everything from the classic Bargain Bucket at KFC to the gastronomic genius of two Michelin-starred chef Mathieu Vinnay at Rue Royale.

Other highlights include the split level Seafood Kitchen, laid-back tapas bar Palmetto, casual come and go cuisine at Mama Pho, modern, avant-garde Greek fare at Ena and a bit of everything from the Far East at the Asian District.

There are also dessert and milkshake-only cafés, ice cream parlours and a day-to-night casual Asian restaurant that turns into a nightclub and karaoke bar until 5am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. That’s Chalet Berezka, by the way.
