It’s risen to become one of the city’s most important cultural festivals, having spent the past seven years building on its foundation as a street party for footwear fanatics.
Sole DXB returns for its eighth edition between Thursday December 6 and Saturday 8, and is now a highly anticipated part of the Dubai winter events calendar.
So, ahead of Sole DXB’s return this weekend, here are the highlights that you need to be look out for while making your visit to d3’s absolutely kicking street festival.
NAS in the UAE
Saturday night will see the arrival of one of the biggest names of the past 20 years in hip-hop. US rapper Nas will be making his Dubai, and UAE, debut. The award-winning rapper, who’s been nominated for 13 Grammys during a 25-year career spanning 13 albums, countless Billboard 200-topping releases, double and triple-platinum selling records and more, will be bringing his finest tracks to the stage for the very first time in Dubai – and for many of the city’s music lovers it’s a long overdue appearance, too.
So, you can expect to hear tracks like Nas is Like, The World is Yours and Made You Look, in what’s promising to be a storming finale to the weekend. Nas’ appearance continues the festival’s growing emphasis on putting on top-quality music acts from around the world. Last year’s event saw Pusha T and Kano come to town, while Stormzy featured back in 2016.
But that’s not all, because we’re moving from one historic rap star to another.
While he may not be with us in body, fans of The Notorious B.I.G. will be made up, because Reebok is bringing the original crown from Biggie’s timeless record King of New York to the Dubai Design District.
And, better yet, you’ll be able to try it on.
And even better yet, you’ll be able to have your photo taken while wearing it, by the very same photographer who shot the original album artwork, Barron Claiborne.
The crown will be available for members of the public to try on from 4pm on Friday December 7 and Saturday 8, so don’t miss it.
Reebok will close its festival on Saturday night with a performance from South African star AKA, while American singer-songwriter Abra is set to hit the main stage, and along with Nas will bring down the curtain on the street culture festival for another year.
Also on the bill across the three-night festival are NYC rap duo Lion Babe, Roxanne Shante (also from New York), UK rappers Giggs and Slowthai, plus Sho Madjozi, saxophonist Masego and more.
I got sole
While music is at the very heart of Sole DXB, footwear is at its soul (sole?), and you can expect to see big reveals, new season debuts and a whole bunch of other activations from some of the world’s leading footwear and sneaker brands.
As ever, Adidas will be there (if you’re desperate for that new limited-edition pair of Yeezys), and you’ll also be able to find out the latest deals and ranges from Puma, skater favourite Concepts and even exhibitions from international brands like Levi’s, Cadillac, Uber, Tommy Hilfiger and more.
There are even going to be some of Dubai’s top restaurants and bars making their way to d3 for the weekend, including Black Tap and Mighty Quinn’s, if you start getting a hankering for some grub after pounding the streets all day looking for new kicks.
Otherwise, there’ll be more than a dozen different brand activations and events across the weekend, as well as a two-day-long basketball tournament, plus live music on the main stage from 6pm until late into the evening – including an appearance by resident Dubai DJ Mr Shef Codes.
It’s all lining up to be an absolutely epic weekend, that’ll get you on your feet and over to d3. Now that’s good for the sole...
