folly by Nick & Scott
Stylish rooftop spot looking out to the Arabian Gulf
Fancy sundowners looking out across Arabesque architecture? With views of the Burj Al Arab? And a great happy hour to boot? folly by Nick & Scott has the lot covered – and more besides.
Set over multiple levels, this bar and restaurant draws residents and tourists in their droves, thanks to its classy aesthetic, superb vistas and expert mixology. All neutral shades and quirky ingredients, folly manages to be both understated and deeply trendy, with a bar bites menu to match (whatever you do, don’t leave without trying the guinea fowl sausage rolls – seriously).
Among the many kitsch elements of one of the city’s most established tourist destinations (Souk Madinat Jumeirah is themed around an old Arabian souk, after all), it stands out as a chic, gimmick-free place to while away a whole evening.
Staff are well-versed in the menu and keen to offer recommendations based on your likes and dislikes. And if you can’t find anything you fancy on the list, they’ll mix something up that you do.
Whether you’re on holiday or just want to pretend you are, folly ticks all the boxes.
Bar open daily 3pm-1.30am. Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim (04 430 8535).
Smart, upbeat Far East-inspired nightspot with top Marina views
Despite having rivals stacked beneath and above it, this smart, cool Asian bar and restaurant manages to stand out among them all.
From the fresh, spa-like aromas that surround guests from the minute they step out of the elevator to the plush, almost 1920s Shanghai-style bar that awaits at the end of the entrance tunnel, Asia Asia delivers a really rather immersive experience. You could even forget you’re in Dubai – until you step out on to the terrace and see the whole, shimmering Dubai Marina presented before you.
While the mixed drinks are pricey, they’re inventive, with creative Far Eastern twists, and well worth trying if you’re here for the special occasion it deserves. That said, this bar doesn’t need saving for a special occasion – as many of Dubai’s ladyfolk are well aware. Every Tuesday, ladies’ night takes over the bar, and crowds descend en masse.
Chilled, funky beats play in the background, staff swirl around bearing plates of Japanese- and Asian-fusion bites and the atmosphere fizzes with lively chatter while yachts cruise by on the waters below.
For a funky night out with fantastic vistas, you’ll be hard-pressed to find better in Dubai Marina.
Open Sat-Wed 4pm-1am; Thu-Fri 4pm-2am. Pier 7, Dubai Marina (04 276 5900).
Cielo Sky Lounge
Balearic vibes at this rooftop bar looking out across the Dubai Creek
For views across the Creek and out to the ever-changing Dubai skyline, it’s still hard to beat Cielo. Few venues offer such an outlook on the city, but from its perch at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, this rooftop spot nails it.
Neighbouring outdoor hotspots Boardwalk (directly below) and QD’s, as the sun sets this place really comes into its own – particularly on a Friday, when you’ll find the sundowner crowd slowly drifting in.
It may not be for everyone, but it certainly attracts the crowd seeking Ibiza-style vibes, with its blue and white décor delivering those Balearic vibes, particularly when paired with music from the bar’s DJ.
Don’t expect to be able to visit on a budget – prices are fittingly on the steep side for the impressive setting. But what a setting it is.
Open Sat-Thu 6pm-2am; Fri noon-3am (noon-4pm brunch). Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, Deira (04 416 1800).
