Sometimes all you want is a chilled-out pint after work, which – if you’re at the northern end of Sheikh Zayed Road – is where this friendly gastropub in The H Dubai comes in handy.
The Lion by Nick & Scott – which was previously The Black Lion, intially an American and later a British bar – was taken over by Dubai chefs Nick Alvis and Scott Price in April this year.
The duo are best known for Time Out Dubai’s Best European Restaurant 2018, folly by Nick & Scott, and the pair have always said it has been their long-held dream to run a pub. And voilà.
If you visited the pub in its previous form, visually not a vast amount has changed. There’s banquette-style seating, a large central bar and retro fixtures.
There are now several screens showing live sport, thanks to the pair’s love of football. It’s fairly dark and dingy by night – in a good way – and the vibe is chilled-out. Pub-wise, it’s not your local at home (it’s set just off the fancy hotel hotel lobby) but it’s a close shout.
Drinks are on the pricey side – Dhs50 for a pint and around Dhs60 for a glass of grape, so it’s wise to make a trip during happy hour from Saturday to Thursday, 4pm to 7pm, with drinks at Dhs33.
It’s also worth trying out some of the gastropub grub. Deals run every night of the week and there are match day roasts and a pint for Dhs100. If you’re just here for post-work drinks and a bite, don’t miss the bar snacks basket, with quail egg Scotch eggs, chicken wings and beef sausage rolls, which are all very tasty, although we still can’t fathom the super-sweet barbecue sauce.
If you’re looking for laid-back British style, you’d do worse than a pint and the match here.
The bottom line
Chilled-out pub to head to for happy hour.
