A classic spot for al fresco drinks

It’s an oldie and an undisputed goodie – a reputation that was upheld on our most recent visit to classic al fresco spot QD’s.

For more than ten years, this outdoor bar and restaurant has rustled up a tried and tested recipe for success – a vast waterfront terrace, stunning skyline scenery and mixed drinks aplenty. It keeps us coming back again and again, and it seems we aren’t the only ones.

When we visit over the weekend it’s absolutely heaving and the cogs tick over like a well-oiled machine. There’s live sport, a live DJ, food being served up left, right and centre and plenty of shisha on the go.

The drinks menu is vast, with inventive creations and some twists on the old classics. Pints of hops start at Dhs48 with mixed drinks and grape coming in at around the same mark.

There’s also a happy hour from Sunday to Thursday from 5pm until 8pm when selected drinks will cost just Dhs25.

There’s a mix of low-slung couches, high drinks tables and restaurant-style seating, all from which to soak up the views.

The bar counts Cielo Sky Lounge (Highly Commended Best Bar with a View at our Music & Nightlife Awards this year) and Boardwalk (the current Best Outdoor Restaurant) among its neighbours, so it’s in good company if you want to make a night of it, too.

Music from the live DJ will transport you to the Balearics, and there are massive screens showing live sports if you choose to head here on match day.

The bar food menu is a mix of Arabic mezze, Mediterranean, seafood and grills – with a banana split sundae curiously placed with the main courses. Dishes are generously portioned and nice enough.

That being said, it’s good for bar food, and if you make it in time for happy hour you can get your money’s worth.

A mainstay of the scene, here’s to the next ten years.
