Couqley French Bistro

French bar and restaurant in JLT

It’s only right that recent years have seen a growing number of top bars arrive in JLT, much to the delight of the neighbourhood’s residents. While there are a number of decent bars in the area, Cluster A is home to a disproportionate number of them.

Neighbouring Nara Pan Asian, Jazz@PizzaExpress and ubk is Couqley, a French bistro that arrived from Lebanon in 2016. With two branches of the bar/bistro, one in Beirut and one outside in Dbayeh, Dubai marks its first international expansion, and in the three years it’s become a steady choice on the JLT bar and restaurant scene.

It’s quintessentially Parisian, with charm and class by the bucketload and a welcoming atmosphere. Swankily dressed waiting staff will take your order, ask you about your day and figure out which mixed drink would suit you best, and none of it feels contrived.

The bar area is homely, full of dark wood and low ceilings, with high stool-accompanied tables dotted around. It’s not a particularly large bar area, but that adds to its charm. It’s spacious enough, but also pokey enough to feel cosy and intimate.

Every day you’ll get a happy hour running from 4pm until 8pm with mixed drinks available from just Dhs27, pints for Dhs32 and bottles of grape for Dhs99. And the Wednesday night ladies’ night gets suitably rammed, as you’d expect when there’s unlimited grape on offer for women.

There’s an impressive range of premium drinks and the bar staff are knowledgeable.

Chuck a solid playlist of tunes into the mix, and it’s hard to go wrong at this petite French haunt in JLT.
