Roar

Revamped bar with a new happy hour

There are loads of reasons to visit trendy hotel FIVE Palm Jumeirah Dubai, but undoubtedly the main draw is for sunset drinks. With one of the very best views on the Palm, you can’t beat kicking back with a sundowner in hand – and visitors will thank you for the super recommendation.

But if you’re looking for something quieter than The Penthouse, Roar is worth checking out.

It’s a revamped version of Above 21, and if you’ve visited before you’ll see that the shell of the bar has remained. The comfy blue chairs and dark wooden display cabinets are still there, but the old-fashioned carpets are gone and there’s a jungle twist.

Staff wear leopard print shirts, palm trees and greenery have been placed strategically throughout and the sofas have a scattering of tropical patterned cushions. There’s also a roaring china leopard (or is it cheetah?) statue taking pride of place in front of the huge windows.

And that’s what you’re really here for – the absolutely stunning views. The huge floor-to-ceiling windows give way to views down to the hotel pool and across to Dubai Marina and Ain Dubai.

Set on the 13th floor (the Above 21 private members’ version on the floor above remains), you’ll get the same sprawling vistas as from our Bar of the Year, The Penthouse (but without the jostling for a prime selfie-taking postion as you’ll get at the latter).

The bar is housed in a petite area and in winter when the sun is beating down mid-summer it will be a quiet haven of glorious air-conditioning.

Visit at sunset for the best views, and for the best deals. Every day from 5pm until 8pm you’ll get two-for-one on a range of inventive mixed drinks, in what is the hotel’s first, and only, happy hour. It’s welcome too, as prices aren’t cheap normally.

With al fresco drinks being the order of the day right now, The Penthouse will inevitably attract the crowds, but for the same super views in a more relaxed bar, Roar is worth making noise about.
