An utterly massive al fresco bar

A.E.R Image #2

A.E.R, which apparently stands for An Experience to Remember (or is it a nod to its open air setting?) is the latest addition to the ultra-competitive DIFC area. Found in Emirates Financial Towers, where 7 Elephants use to be, we’re intrigued to see if the brand-new restaurant and lounge lives up to its bold moniker.

DIFC attracts a well-heeled crowd and A.E.R promises an experience “laden with luxury”.

The massive 20,000 sq ft space is set over different areas with sliding doors opening up to a sprawling outdoor terrace with a huge 100ft-long bar, which claims to be the longest in Dubai (we’re sure another Dubai bar has something to say about that).

It’s all very glamorous with plush sofas, touches of gold, an art deco style and stunning rooftop views across Dubai’s sparkly skyline.

The vast menu, which will please even the pickiest of eaters, comes presented on a tablet and under each dish and mixed drink it tells you how long it takes to prepare.

Dishes range from beef tartare, hummus, salads, flatbreads, dim sum, burgers, pastas and risottos to gold-dusted sushi.

The drinks menu is just as comprehensive with grape, hops, house beverages and innovative mixed drinks featuring ingredients like popcorn, charcoal and saffron at around Dhs60.

Plus the swish bar offers daily happy hour from 5pm until 8pm with two-for-one drinks and every Tuesday is ladies’ night from
8pm onwards with Josh McCartney croons his way through smooth tunes, a live DJ and three free drinks.

The drinks come artfully presented and the service is swift. But a massive venue needs an even bigger crowd to create an atmosphere, which currently isn’t the case. An experience to remember? If A.E.R manages to draw the crowds this has potential, especially in the winter. Whether it pulls it off where others haven’t is another matter. We hope it does.
