Newish sports bar on Palm Jumeirah with a multiple screens

Vuvuzela Image #2

It’s a good time to be a sports fan in Dubai as there’s been a plethora of sports bars opening in recent months – and we’re enjoying the increased choice when it comes to watching the big games.

One of the most recent to arrive is Vuvuzela at Fairmont The Palm, which when it opened in November promised to become  “Palm Jumeirah’s most friendly neighborhood pub”. And while we’re not sure the pub moniker really fits, it’s a cosy space that once the game is on has a buzzing atmosphere.

Named after the musical instrument that’s used at sporting events, and traditionally to call in social gatherings in South Africa, it’s a petite spot that has potential.

At the moment it’s a bit shiny and new, with lighting that’s a little too bright – meaning it lacks that rustic pub feel.

There’s no escaping that Vuvuzela feels like a hotel bar. But when it’s packed out during a match (arrive on time to secure a seat) you’ll have prime views of the game accompanied by a lively vibe.

As well as several TV screens there’s a 120-in central projector, which makes it almost like a mini sports cinema, while there are signed shirts from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez on the walls.

There’s also a menu of classic pub grub with burgers, wings and the like. Don’t miss the jalapeño poppers, packed full of gooey, steaming cheese with a fiery kick, while chicken tenders are tasty, with tangy, moreish honey mustard dip.

Drinks are pricey though (at a minimum Dhs55 for hops and grape) but there’s a daily happy hour from 3pm until 6pm where house drinks and bottles of hops are two for one.

Most of the patrons are Palm residents or hotel guests, as it’s not a bar you’d travel to, but if you’re looking for a cosy spot to watch a big game Vuvuzela is better than you might think.
