A new speakeasy-style bar on the Palm

Knox Image #2

Speakeasy-style bars are very on trend at the moment and there are plenty of them popping up (not so much on the down-low) across the city.

One of the most recent to open is Knox at brand-new hotel Andaz Dubai The Palm.

Unlike other “secret” bars that are accessed through a hidden door in the lobby, Knox isn’t in the main hotel building, so you’re unlikely to stumble upon it – which is in theory the point of a speakeasy. Head across the driveway and down a staircase and you’ll find it.

Humorous quotes greet you at the entrance – and on the stairs – while downstairs the area is spacious, and chilly – literally.

It’s not busy on our visit, but that could be down to its newness or the aforementioned need-to-know, but either way Knox is a little too large to be cosy, especially given the lack of footfall.

Staff are friendly and there’s a decent happy hour from 5pm until 8pm every day with glasses of grape for Dhs34, shorts for Dhs32 and hops and mixed drinks for Dhs35.

If you’re peckish there’s a small bar menu with a section dedicated to wings, as well as loaded fries, cheeseballs and other fried snacks.

The décor is stripped back, with a small area for live music, plus comfy sofas and massive armchairs, as well as a long bar, which will hopefully soon fill up.

But is it too secret? Time will tell.
