Modern Seoul-style bar on Sheikh Zayed Road

Korean fried chicken, drinks towers and K-pop filling your ears? Yes, it’s Dubai’s first actual Seoul-style bar.

Dubai has a handful of Korean restaurants, but all of them on the more traditional side. On the flip, Kimpo, which opened at the start of 2020, brings the youthful, trendy, neon-lit face of Seoul to the UAE.

Housed on the ground floor of Sheikh Zayed Road’s Conrad Dubai, with its own entrance, and in the space formerly occupied by award-winning bar Little Black Door, Kimpo is a riot of graffiti- and pop art-style murals, juxtaposed against barren formica tables. While there is undoubtedly plenty to work with in this cool, clean space, the shouty neon signage is infinitely more electric than the atmosphere. But persevere, just as we did – because it takes a crowd to build a crowd, and this place deserves one. And also because the seriously crunchy fried chicken is all it’s cracked up to be, and the service is a charm. (Even if the phone goes mostly unanswered when you’re trying to call ahead.) Regular prices could do with a little work (it’s Dhs50 upwards a pint), but head over during the daily happy hour (5pm to 8pm) to bring down the bill, when drinks start from Dhs25.

A vibrant, welcome diversification of Sheikh Zayed Road’s bar scene. We look forward to seeing (and eating) a bit more.
