A lively no frills bar in the heart of Al Barsha

Time Out Says

Before we got to 24Bar7, we had the feeling that it would just be another hotel bar with a few guests lurking in a dark corner somewhere. What we got was something completely different. Arriving around 10pm, we were greeted by the sounds of a live band belting out a medley of classic reggae tracks. The large double black wooden doors were enticing at first. They didn’t quite fit with the ambience of the Grand Excelsior Hotel (think high ceilings and mock stone pillars) but we were intrigued by what lay behind them.

The venue itself is quite spacious, and reminds us of an old Jazz club in New York City – walls painted black, a massive stage with a full band and tables dotted around the dancefloor for maximum effect. Though it didn’t have the intimacy or coolness of a Manhattan joint, it did have a welcoming feeling about the place – perhaps it was the two local punters who tried to lure us in at the hotel lobby or the friendly doorman who informed us that ladies drink free from 9pm to 1am. We figured we were in for a random experience to say the least.

Not realising how busy 24Bar7 would be, we failed to call ahead to reserve a table, so we opted to mingle around the bar area. With just two barmen and a venue full of people (mostly opting for the unlimited ladies drinks), service was a little on the slow side. Ordering a glass of white grape, we were horrified to be presented with a smeared, lipstick-stained glass. So we switched our order to bottled hops. But what was more shocking was that the barmen didn’t seem to bat an eyelid at our disgust and without an apology simply moved on to another customer.

The venue does have weekly and daily promotions for mixed drinks, grape, shorts and hops, so an evening out won’t blow the budget. With that said, it does attract all sorts of clientele. You can be sure to spot the over-eager group of guys in the centre of the dancefloor doing a full-on disco routine to the ladies in tracksuits and trainers bopping along to the beat.

What we did find entertaining was the live band that covered everything from Michael Jackson to Bruno Mars. And even better, they could actually sing – something that doesn’t usually seem to matter in some of Dubai’s many other bars.

If you want a fun night of dancing, no frills fuss and no real door policy, 24Bar7 might just be for you.
