Bar 44

Great views and a good happy hour at this lofty Grosvenor House spot

Time Out Says

Despite swathes of skyscrapers in Dubai Marina, the neighbourhood is still not quite spoilt when it comes to equally sky-high nightspots. Fortunately, one of its originals, Bar 44 in the Grosvenor House, is still a worthy choice for a night out.

In fact, this 44th-floor (yes, surprise!) bar has got better with age, now that it has a twinklier-than-ever landscape to look out across and the crowd it draws has mellowed and matured. Bar 44 still boasts the same dark, sultry hues and low-slung armchairs, but the atmosphere has grown much more welcoming and relaxed. The daily happy hour, from 5.30pm until 7.30pm, meanwhile, is well worth arriving early for, with a non-too-shabby selection of drinks available for just Dhs25 each.

And it seems, for once, that someone has really thought about the lighting too, which is just low enough to allow guests to gaze out of the huge windows and see the lights of Dubai Marin and the Palm staring back at them, rather than their own inquisitive faces.

Service is smooth and staff are quick to leave visitors to their evening, dropping in only to replenish the dishes of fat, stuffed olives.

Even if it weren’t for the novel nibbles, we’d still insist you give this place a try.

The bottom line
An oldie, but a goodie.
