Time Out Says

As many a bouncer has said: “if your name ain’t down, you ain’t getting in”. And that’s precisely the mantra at brand-new nightclub-meets-speakeasy Secret Room at FIVE Palm Jumeirah Dubai.

The clue is in the name, really, the only thing is, we’re fairly sure that most allegedly secret clubs don’t announce themselves to the world with social media campaigns. It’s like having a red button with a sign on it saying “nothing to see here, no need to press me”.

Slightly idiosyncratic the name of this new establishment may be, we drop any reservations (and be sure to make one) ahead of arriving at this secretive spot.

This nightclub appears anonymous to those who may have strayed too far from the path at this Palm Jumeirah luxury hotel, and a lone, glamorous concierge stood holding an iPad aloft instantly knows who does, and who does not, gain access to this funky, new underground club.

You’d be greatly advised to call ahead (in reality a booking is all you need to get in), and the voice at the end of the phone asks us to confirm our attendance via WhatsApp. We oblige (and are still now receiving regular adverts as part of yet another mailing list we’ve unwittingly signed up to).

However, don’t let the WhatsApp campaign perturb you from what can otherwise be a cracking, and compact, spot for a bit of a late-night boogie. This slightly gothic club-bar-speakeasy is accessed through a graffiti-lined stairwell, and a door that appears as if from nowhere, aided by a steward and his
trusty keycard.

We enter to find a busy (if not full), bar area, and a select number of VIP tables lining this poky space. It wouldn’t fit in on the scene if it didn’t have some ludicrously priced seating, right? All the other clubs would surely point and laugh.

But, the bar prices aren’t as eye-watering as we expected (at a relatively affordable Dhs55 for a mixed drink). We’ve seen (and paid for) a lot worse at clubs of this style.

Come 1am the bar really livens up, and we also spend a fair chunk of the evening getting our heads around the Museum of Illusions-worthy central bar and vortex-inspired high tables.

Despite its quirks, this Palm club has stonking potential as a late-night favourite.
