Time Out Says
So, fans of Latino beats and bevs you’re in for a treat – as Bar Rumba has it all. As long as you can navigate your way through The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi resort, that is.
Once you’ve spun, climbed, U-turned and meandered your way through sprawling hotel you’ll find yourself in the resto-bar. Still lost? Head to Asia De Cuba and take the lifts up one level.
On the mezzanine, there’s a good-sized floor space for throwing said rumba shapes on, a well-stocked bar and some semi-kitsch, semi-tropical décor. Into neon lights and Cath Kidston? This is for you.
It’s a cool space with a strong menu of mixed drinks with both classics and in-house concoctions to choose from.
It’s at the upper-end of Dubai bars and while you’re okay in easy-going attire (trainers, tees and jeans) anyone after a casual post-work pint be warned, there’s no draught and just a few bottles in the fridge.
The bar is only open three nights a week, which is cut back from when it first threw open its doors earlier this year, standing in the place of China Grill.
If you arrive craving some of the old-style bar bites, you’ll find sushi and spring rolls next to ceviche and tacos, but due to our previous encounters with the food Asia De Cuba, we play it safe and stick to sipping on a drink.
Prices aren’t extortionate and there’s also a decent happy hour deal where you’ll get 50 percent off selected drinks from 7pm until 9pm every night the bar is open, so it’s worth arriving early for a post-work drink.
Bar Rumba also boasts a Tuesday night ladies’ night (although no longer a Wednesday night offering as it used to, as the bar is now closed that night). And while not up to the lofty heights that the China Grill Madame Butterfly nights use to reach, it’s a pretty good deal. Ladies get free-flowing grape and bubbly all night, as well as, strangely, a free hot dog, and the vibe is upbeat, fun and it still draws a reasonable midweek crowd.
Music comes in the form of R&B as well as Latino tunes and the atmosphere is lively in the casual space.
Staff are attentive, happy to help and happy to dance, too.
With decent discounts and a some cool interior design, Bar Rumba is worth a visit if you’re in the area and fancy a laid-back drink and dance.
