Chameleon Club

This Chameleon makes no attempt to blend in to surroundings

Time Out Says

It’s indisputable that the person in charge of designing Byblos TECOM’s new nightclub had an awful lot of fun doing so. Neon lights of varying colour and intensity beam from every available surface, while the pièce de résistance, a giant chameleon with an outstretched tongue, glows ominously from its position over the bar. In case you missed it in this description, these really are the most flamboyant interiors Dubai has seen since Atlantis first unveiled its lobby, and you’d better arrive ready to embrace them.

Things get off to a shaky start, however, with the somewhat hostile demeanour of the club’s door staff leaving guests feeling a little ungraciously received, and after you’ve been carelessly barged aside a few times by the staff on busier nights, it becomes a little difficult not to feel downright unwelcome. When the music policy seems to be bad tech-house and you’re paying upwards of Dhs40 for many drinks, it’s hard to find a reason to stick around.

There are areas inside set up for lounging and snacking, though average sushi and near-incinerated tempura mean its wiser to forget eating altogether. This is one Chameleon that makes no attempt to blend in to its surroundings, though this could work to its advantage – there’s no real club competition in the TECOM area, meaning a change in music, a focus on drinks deals and the inclination to take itself slightly less seriously could see this place stick out for all the right reasons.
