Time Out Says

It may be rapidly expanding, but Dubai is still a pretty small town, and it’s not uncommon to find yourself sitting on a stool next to the same faces propping up the same bars.

While it might ensure you’ve always got company for the Championship, sometimes you just need a place where nobody knows your name (and preferably a massive, comfy armchair). Luckily, Sheikh Zayed Road’s busy hotel strip is home to a handful of quiet and often-forgotten pubs, perfect for your purpose. Charlie’s is one of the smarter and more comfortable options.

Feeling not unlike an historic smuggler’s tavern, thanks to the warm, lantern-style glow of the lighting, low, faux-beamed ceilings and wobbly, slightly sticky tables, it’s a cosy, low-key place to watch the match and swerve your usual crowd.

Prices are fairly standard for the city, at around Dhs38 for a pint, or Dhs30 if you stop in during the pub’s daily happy hour, which runs from 6pm to 8pm. Service is on-the-ball but not hovering, and punters are left to eyeball the numerous screens or decompress after a busy day.

Along with a menu of steaks and stodgy pub grub, Charlie’s has pretty much everything covered for a relaxing drink away from your regular. All it needs now is those armchairs.

The bottom line
A solid spot for a quiet drink on Sheikh Zayed Road.
