Cobra Kai

Make a trip to this kitsch new Asian bar that’s the talk of Media City

Time Out Says

As half of one of the most talked-about new openings in Media City, Cobra Kai, it seems, is on the must-list for every media-type (and otherwise) in the area.

We’ve visited this funky new Asian hangout several times since it opened in July and every time it’s been packed out.

Set alongside Asian street food restaurant Mr Miyagi’s in the Media One Hotel (sitting in the spaces that formerly housed Spirito and Crab Tavern) the vibe in both is upbeat, fun and perfect for a post-work catch-up.

We love the kitsch, original décor, especially the giant (faux) cherry blossom tree, which makes for a striking centrepiece.

From the puntastic neoon signage adorning the walls to the brightly coloured seating and beachside-style stand selling buckets of drinks, Cobra Kai is as close to stereotypical Thailand as you’re going to find in Dubai. And there’s even a space devoted to hops pong, too.

As you might suspect from the name, there’s a good chance The Karate Kid will be showing on the main screen by the DJ booth (an area that can later double for karaoke if you time your trip to the venue right).

Prices aren’t as high as some places in the city, with a bottle of grape coming in at under Dhs200, but watch out as rounds can quickly add up if you’re not careful and happen to be in here for the long-haul. Be prepared to queue, too – it’s not the easiest place to bag a drink on a typical Thursday night.

If you’re peckish there’s a short menu of bar snacks (we do wish the prawn crackers were free) with food coming from neighbouring Mr Miyagi’s – the chicken satay is our pick.

A little cheesy, a little cheeky and a lot of fun, Cobra Kai is definitely worth a visit.

The bottom line
Upbeat and fun, head here after work.
