Time Out Says

Not many people head to the Burj Al Arab for a casual drink. Despite Gold On 27 opening last year as one of the iconic hotel’s “more accessible” outlets (i.e. there’s no minimum spend and you can book through an app), it’s still not somewhere you’re likely to stop by off the cuff after work.

But really, it shouldn’t be anyway. This is a place you’ll want to get dressed up for and make an occasion out of.

Set on the 27th floor of the hotel, floor-to-ceiling windows give way to panoramic views out across Jumeirah.

After being greeted by hostesses with (gold) iPads, you’ll be shown through the narrow room and past the bar. Which is gold. Very gold. A huge, reflective gold panel steals the show, while twinkling golden lights hang from the ceiling, golden bar stools glitter invitingly and the walls shimmer with gold patterns. It’s glitzy, bold and decadent – but somehow manages to remain on the fun, rather than tacky, side.

On our visit the bar is fairly busy. The vibe is surprisingly laid-back, with guests settled into comfy chairs, and there’s a pleasant buzz in the air. Prices are steep, but no more so than other bars of this ilk, and a menu relays a huge variety of concoctions. Several containing – you guessed it – gold.

For a special, unique night out, it’s worth making a booking.

The bottom line
Ostentatious, yet laid-back.
