Havana Social Club

Surprisingly lively Cuban bar on Bluewaters Dubai

Time Out Says

Known for its edgy vibes, classic 1950s cars, vibrant street food and flamboyant dancing, Havana is a long way from Bluewaters Dubai in more ways than just geography. And while Havana Social Club at Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai can’t be labelled the most authentic of bars, it’s given it a good go.

Set on the ground floor of the swanky Las Vegas-born hotel, just along from Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, is the Cuban-inspired bar.

The setup is a little mish-mash – on entry the TV screen showing sports, moody lighting, dark leather sofas and cubby hole housing a cabinet filled with Cuban rolls make it almost gentleman’s club-like. However, venture around the corner and you’ll find chequered tiled floors, vibrant furnishings and Latino décor with plenty of bright blues, yellows and greens.

There’s also a terrace outside for winter, though if you’re looking for super sunset views, head back out and upstairs to Laurel, the chilled-out bar and terrace on the hotel’s lobby level.

As you’d expect from a Cuban bar, there’s a range of themed mixed drinks, which fall around the Dhs75 mark, while short measures and house grape are around Dhs50 to Dhs60. There’s also an extensive selection of Mexican and Cuban short drinks.

And visit between 4pm and 7pm every day (except Friday) and you’ll get 50 percent off.

Peckish? Order up some bar snacks as while the Latino-style food won’t blow you away it’s tasty and portions are ample.

A mountain of tortilla chips accompany chunky guacamole, while flaky pastry empanadas break open to reveal steaming centres of well-spiced cheese and beans. Turkey croquettes, bursting with a smooth, cheesy filling and studded with chunks of ham are also a hit, as are the crispy, well-stuffed chicken tacos.

The rapidly growing island has plenty of places to go and grab a bite to eat or a drink, but it’s hit and miss as to whether there’ll be anyone there. One place you’re guaranteed a good crowd is at the Thursday night ladies’ night, which runs weekly from 8pm until 11pm. The offer – sadly but unsurprisingly – has recently been updated from a generous unlimited drinks to four freebies – but for a Thursday it’s a draw enough and there’s a big crowd, all dressed up and ready to party.

If you’re looking for a rustic, traditional Latino party spot this isn’t it, but for cheap and casual drinks you’d do worse.
