There’s nothing secret about this “underground” club anymore

Time Out Says

When HOBO Club, the “hipster-themed” venue in an unmarked car park, first opened, it wanted to be Dubai’s “best-known secret” and cater to unpretentious night-owls in the city (even though you have to pass a velvet rope, a bunch of bouncers and walk across a red carpet to the heavy black doors in order to get in).

In some ways, it has certainly achieved its dream of becoming a “best-known secret” if the crowds on a Thursday night are anything to judge by. It is absolutely packed to the rafters with party-goers, so you can barely move around the tiny, dark event space, while queues to the bar are four people deep.

The idea was for a DJ to only play vinyls of ’70s to modern-day music and, on this occasion, serious techno and house music is blasting.

On the upside, at least the club is now also open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10pm, making it more accessible than previously, when it was only open on a Monday, from 11pm.

Perhaps HOBO doesn’t need to be more accessible, though. It’s far too small to cater to any kind of crowd.

With such a mish-mash of punters, music and aspirations on the agenda, we’re not quite sure what this place wants to be. Maybe we’re just not “hipster” enough to appreciate it.

The bottom line
Don’t go when it’s busy.
