Hoxton Urban Bar & Eatery
Time Out Says
For a bit, anyway, because it’s back. Sort of. Well, it’s not back, but another bar that’s almost exactly the same is in the same space. We suppose it is the same while simultaneously not being the same – if you know what we mean? Philosophising aside, Axe House has been reborn as
Hoxton Urban Bar & Eatery, and if you were a big fan of its predecessor then you’ll feel right at home again here.
It’s made a point of keeping the best of good ol’ Axe, but has given it a bit of a clean up. In fact, this spot has volleyed back and forth between clean-cutliness and being roughed up a bit over the last couple of years. Prior to Axe’s East London dark street vibes – graffiti, chip board and the like – the same space was occupied by Cocktail Kitchen, which was almost unnervingly clean, if we’re honest.
Hopefully Hoxton has struck a neat balance between the two, because gone is the aforementioned spray paint and MDF all over the place, and it’s instead been given a bit of a polish. That, in itself, gives Hoxton a bit of a weird vibe that we can’t quite put our finger on.
It’s certainly not as popular, as yet, as Axe House was, based on the sparsely populated bar we enter on a Friday evening. Perhaps word hasn’t yet got out that this place is back in action.
We’re sure, however, that it will start filling up again quickly once word does get out about it’s quite frankly staggeringly good-value happy hour. Every day from 4pm until 8pm you’ll be able to get your eager mits on some wonderfully affordable beverages.
Premium pints will set you back just Dhs23, as will a glass of the bar’s white, red or pink grape. Meanwhile, for even less, you can get your hands on a range of mixed drinks for an even more pocket-friendly Dhs20.
We’re waiting for Hoxton to spring into life, because it still has all the hallmarks that made its predecessor such a local favourite. Craft hops fans can expect to find loads of good options on tap, as well as the den out back with pool and air hockey tables and a gigantic TV showing the big match of the day.
It’s more of the same, but just a little bit quieter for now.
