Time Out Says
In the Marina Byblos hotel, this newish arrival joins established British pub Nell Gwynne, while brand-new “gastroclub” (we don’t know, either) The Hideout recently opened in place of longstanding club Societe.
As we’ve mentioned on previous occasions the clichés at Le Frenchy are abundant. It’s kind of fun but it’s also kind of tacky. When it opened in early September, Le Frenchy promised to “bring a unique taste of France”. We’re not sure about that – as it doesn’t have any of the classy French flair we’d expect from a Parisian club.
If you’re visiting for drinks, head here later in the evening, as until about 11pm the vibe is sterile with the lighting cranked up too high. Later on, this is dimmed and the music is upped, which improves the mood.
As expected for the setting, drinks aren’t overly expensive with house grape coming in at Dhs39 and hops at around Dhs45. Standard mixed drinks range from Dhs59 to Dhs70.
There are various theme nights with DJ Andy Newton on the decks, including Urban Night on Fridays, Oh La La Thursdays and Le Soirée Français on a Wednesday serving up ’60s tunes.
And the deals are not to be sniffed at. If you head down on a Tuesday, ladies will get unlimited free drinks from 9pm until midnight, while blokes will get a free bottle of hops. Meanwhile Sunday to Thursday from 5pm until 8pm you’ll get buy one, get one free on all drinks, and on “Happy Sunday” that extends to the entire night. On a Saturday you’ll get a free glass of grape when you order a selection of cheeses. Despite all this, it’s not enough to get the crowd in, and it’s very quiet on our visit.
We’d recommend visiting Le Frenchy for dinner – the food is surprisingly tasty and decent value – but we won’t be rushing back to visit the bar alone.
