Time Out Says
The captive audience means the place is packed to the rafters more often than not, with families, groups of girlfriends, couples and gaggles of blokes all jostling for space inside. During the cooler months the terrace also gets plenty of action, and when the patio doors swing open revealing the rolling green of the golf club beyond, you can see why Maison Mathis has such a following.
But what kind of venue is this (beyond being a busy one)? Well, it’s the perfect spot for fellas (or ladies) to relax after a round of golf, of course, or stop off on the way home from the office for a bit of decompression and the dining area is great for getting the family together for a bite to eat. It’s a bit of a Jack of all trades, but we have to admit we like it.
There’s a Belgian theme running through the draught hops choices and bar snacks menu, but the décor isn’t your usual dark browns. No, here everything is bright and bit more Art Deco. There are happy hours every afternoon, ladies’ night on a Wednesday (also lads’ night during September) and other drink and food deals throughout the week.
If there’s no space outside, we prefer taking a spot at one of the high tables in the bar area than veering towards the dining room (which is often busy and loud), it’s good for getting served quickly, too.
We’re not regulars, but it’s nice to be in a bustling venue.
