Maxx Music Bar
Time Out Says
While Al Barsha might not be best known for its pumping party scene, Maxx Music Bar is something of a dimly-lit, no-frills, nightlife enclave among an otherwise quiet residential area of the city.
It’s nestled just off the lobby of Citymax Hotel Al Barsha at the Mall, tucked behind Mall of the Emirates, although here we couldn’t feel further from Dubai.
The bar is in a fairly small room lined on one side with speakers of all shapes and sizes, while much of the rest of the space is taken up by the tightly crammed stage.
There’s a lot of faux brick, while generic images of rock and roll line the walls (Studio 54 this is not). But while you might think that a no-frills concept like this would struggle to find a crowd in Dubai, it’s absolutely packed when we arrive and doesn’t let up.
You won’t find any glitz and glamour here, but there’s a brilliant covers band that keeps the place bouncing right through until the early hours, pumping out tunes ranging from Bob Marley’s No Woman No Cry to I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas.
And while it’s unlikely that there will be internationally-renowned guest bands on the line-up, there’s a perhaps equally entertaining open mic night every Tuesday with those brave enough to take to the stage getting 30 percent off their total bill.
With the live band turning it up to 11 (they play every night), the dancefloor is packed as the not-so-youthful crowd throws shapes to hit after hit.
Meanwhile, for everyone else it’s standing room only – and we’re not surprised, as it’s a proper party.
WHAT IS IT...

It’s absolutely pumping and the covers band know how to fill the dancefloor
