Mr. Miyagi’s Studio City
Time Out Says
But, having opened a second branch in Dubai Studio City in July, does the Mr. Miyagi’s sequal have a little bit more about it than Karate Kid Part II?
You’ll be pleased to know that we’re going to move on from movie references, and gloss right over the 2010 Karate Kid remake with Jaden Smith while we’re at it.
Found within the new, trendy Studio One Hotel, the new bar is smaller and Miyagi-er than ever before. It’s surprisingly dinky, truth be told.
But, unpeterbed by its modest size, we arrive late in the week just in time for a post-work crowd to start trickling in.
You’d be forgiven for thinking we’d entered a far more wintery climate considering the gale-force breeze hammering out from the many air-conditioning units dotted around the bar.
Like the original, a huge cherry blossom tree sits firmly in the middle of this bar, though due to the venue’s compact nature it bodes a far more intimidating presence than its Media City-based counterpart. Dozens of umbrellas, neon signs, Asian street-themed paraphernalia and more adorn the walls, and staff are as friendly as you could wish for – although it is oddly jarring when their colleagues from the adjoining El Chapo’s Tacos occassionally stroll through, orange jump suits and all. It sort of shatters the illusion for an in-no-uncertain-terms theme bar.
Pleasantly, it’s non-smoking inside, and unlike its elder sister, this branch of Mr. Miyagi’s features two outdoor areas – the front terrace significantly more relaxing than the rear.
Otherwise its intimacy adds to its liveliness and we can imagine some serious shindigs kicking off in this bar as it settles into life in Dubai. That said, the playful, neon street-theme effect again feels somewhat disorienting when passing by the grey-washed walls of the corridor between the bar and the bathrooms (which are shared with the hotel swimming pool, so don’t be surprised if you see someone in a swimsuit).
But with entrances for Mr. Miyagi’s and El Chapo’s Tacos in said corridor, it all feels a bit more like a surreal escape room than a pumping nightlife venue.
