Time Out Says
It’s set in the Holiday Inn Express next to Safa Park. The hotel is a little difficult to find, owing to the building works going on in the area, but when you’ve found it, you’ll easily spot Muchachas, with its two wide white doors opposite the entrance.
Once inside, it’s obvious the team have gone to a lot of effort to make this venue look good. It’s pleasing on the eye and full of quirky details, from bottles of hot sauce labelled “Unicorn Tears” on each table to bunches of chillis hanging up by the bar and cactuses (or should that be cacti?) on skateboards dotted around the room.
The soundtrack is disappointing, though, if you’ve gone expecting to hear Bamboleo or mariachi music – they’ve gone for a more hip vibe.
Everything is painted in bright pastel colours, with pipes and wooden beams on the ceiling.
There are two levels inside, and you can choose to sit at a high table with a friend, a longer table with a group, or in a booth at the far end which feels a little more away from it all.
Staff are friendly, know their way around the menu and are eager to make suggestions.
There’s a decent selection of mixed drinks, some of which are made with slightly unusual ingredients, from avocado to chilli and chocolate. It’s a bar that’s a must-try for the adventurous.
The bottom line
Authentic Mexico meets pure-bred hipster.
