Player Sports Bar & Terrace

A revamped sports bar in Downtown Dubai

Time Out Says

PERMANENTLY CLOSED

When Player Sports Lounge shut its doors it was one of the most short-lived bars out there, even for this fast-paced city.

Located on the 31st floor of the Sofitel Downtown it boasted great views and even better deals, so we were sad to hear of its demise. However, we were promised its relocation – and the team hasn’t let us down.

Now situated on the pool deck on the fifth floor of the Downtown hotel, the new-and-improved Player Sports Bar & Terrace not only boasts a massive indoor area, there’s also a sweeping al fresco terrace with (partial) views of Burj Khalifa.

It could do with better signage in the hotel itself (the “hotel guests only past this point” banners on the doors you have to go through to reach it are somewhat confusing) but head to the swimming pool and you’ll find the friendly sports bar.

The sprawling terrace contains a combination of high tables and low tables with sofas – as well as some weird green umbrellas. Indoors there’s a plethora of massive screens to catch the live sport from every angle.

There are also darts, pool tables, foosball and hops pong to keep you entertained, as well as a large central bar.

We take a seat outside, which is pleasantly busy (despite the off-putting signage), with large groups winding down post-work.The vibe is buzzing and the crowd is mixed, with mainly office groups and a spattering of couples sitting around the edges.

The drinks menu is standard, but there are some deals worth shouting about – especially the daily happy hour, which runs from 4pm until 8pm with grape, hops and shorts for just Dhs23.

The bar has also recently launched a brunch, coming in at just Dhs225 for house beverages from 1pm until 4pm every Friday, which is sure to please sports fans.

There’s a decent bar snacks menu – as long as you’re not on a diet – starring nachos, pizzas, sliders, quesadillas et al if you get peckish, too. There’s also shisha.

Service is a little hit and miss, but mostly the team are friendly and attentive.

This bar benefits from is new, spacious area, especially that terrace, and could soon become a go-to sports spot in the area, thanks to the massive screens and decent value drinks.

Once people hear about Player, it’s sure to be packed.
