Room 108

Charming new cigar lounge that’s worth going out of your way for

Time Out Says

If you’re the kind of person who likes to ring a bell for service, you’ll be right at home in new cigar lounge Room 108. But even if you’re not so aristocratically inclined, you’ll find a lot to like here.

And even homebody Marina dwellers should consider stumping up the cab fare to Bur Dubai for this one.

Despite the closure of The Music Room earlier in 2017, Majestic City Retreat Hotel still has more going for it than most. A brilliant Greek eatery in Elia, and funky Asian eats (and live music) at Miss Wáng. And this tiny, cosy bar only makes it even more worthy of a visit.

Filled with oversized armchairs, woven rugs and heavy, antique-style wooden tables, the lounge has the feel of a colonial-era old boys’ club (which may explain the large, schoolyard-style bells on each table). Fittingly, given the bar’s primary selling point, there are distinctly Cuban themes at play, from the background music to the drinks menu (though, perhaps unsurprisingly, this doesn’t extend to the bar snacks).

Even without a schoolmistress-style ringing (we can’t bring ourselves to), service is swift and, when paired with some very reasonable drinks prices (grape from Dhs35, mixed drinks from Dhs40 and drafts from Dhs39), it just makes this place even more likeable.

Feeling like something out of a period thriller, there can be few better places in Dubai for a secret rendezvous with, say, that best friend your other half loathes above all others, or an international spy on the hunt for a super-villain who’s threatening to end the world. Or a better film than that, but we’re not here to write an original screenplay for you.

We’re here to tell you that Room 108 is superb. Go now.

The bottom line
Cool, cosy and not just for old boys.
